چکیده

This paper provides the first combined theoretical and empirical analysis of the impact of private school entry on private schools’ strategic choices of quality, addressing the concern that school competition can harm poorer students. I develop a model where schools select their quality when (1) the match between a school and a student affects test scores, and (2) wealthier students’ enrollment decisions are more responsive to quality. The model demonstrates that private school entry can increase test scores for wealthy students and decrease them for poor students in the same school. Using Pakistani data, I find that entry increases within-school test score inequality by 0.1 SD. Structural estimates of schools’ equilibrium choices show that schools choose match-specific qualities that strongly favor wealthy students, and this intensifies with entry. Moving a poor student from the average private school to one that caters to her increases her test score by 0.2 SD. ∗I am deeply indebted to my advisors, Chris Avery, Roland Fryer, Asim Khwaja, and Nathan Nunn for their guidance and encouragement. Capacity and Product Market Competition: Measuring Market Power in a "Puppy-Dog" Industry

Capacity and Product Market Competition: Measuring Market Power in a 'Puppy-Dog' Industry* In this paper we specify and estimate a structural model which accounts for competition in two variables: capacity and prices. The model has a two-stage setup. In the first stage firms make capacity decisions followed by a product-differentiated, price setting game in the second stage. Since costs are end...

Technology Licensing in a Differentiated Oligopoly

We show the effects of product differentiation and product market competition on technology licensing by an outside innovator. For a certain range of product differentiation, both the innovator and the society prefer royalty licensing compared to auction (or fixed-fee), irrespective of Cournot and Bertrand competition, if the number of potential licensees is sufficiently large. Hence, for such ...

Endogenous Efficiency Gains from Mergers with and without Product Differentiation*

This paper analyzes endogenous efficiency gains from mergers. It considers oligopolistic homogeneous good markets and duopolistic and triopolistic markets under product differentiation (quantity and price competition). In a two-stage game, firms invest in cost-reducing innovation (with and without mergers) and then compete in output/prices. It is found that in homogeneous good markets, all poss...

Adoption of Product and Process Innovations in Differentiated Markets: The Impact of Competition

The paper examines the effects of the degree of competition on the firms’ decision to innovate in differentiated markets. We find that a low (high) degree of product differentiation (competition) weakly supports the introduction of new products. Firms’ weakly favour a process innovation if the degree of product differentiation (competition) is high (low). In addition, assumptions on the strateg...

Competitive Outcomes in Product-Differentiated Oligopoly

This paper analyzes the effect of market concentration and product differentiation on the observed outcomes of competition among oligopolists. The empirical framework is designed to examine whether competition is less intense in markets with equal levels of concentration, but more differentiation among the products offered. A two-stage estimation procedure is proposed to address the endogeneity...
